Feb 15, Steve rated it really liked it Shelves: Everyone wanted to walk like an Egyptian. On the language end of things, with its wondrous and often sinister rhythms, there's a lot revel in.

Blackwood is not so much a storyteller, but more a creator of atmosphere. The problem here is that the atmosphere he creates, successfully, keeps on repeating itself in long passages.

This novella could have easily been reduced by a third, or halved. On the good side however, very few write weird or any fiction like this anymore.

With that in mind, it was easy for me to forgive Blackwood his excesses. Some may find this story not all that horrific, and even tending toward some sort of misty fantasy with archaeologists set in the desert.

But there are more than a few hints of ancient Lovecraftian immensities beyond time and space.

And at its heart, the story maintains a vampiric, soul sucking thread that threatens all you get pulled to ancient spell -- and obsession with Egypt.

If interested, here's a link to the story. I don't think it's currently available on Kindle, and it doesn't appear in the Blackwood collections that I own.

Mentre lo leggevo ho riscontrato forti echi di "Der Sandmann" di E. Posso solo dire che tratta di un viaggio spirituale testimoniato esternamente da una non ben definita voce narrante.

This is a horror novella written in It's one of Blackwood's less popular works about a man telling his story about lost of his friend George Isley to the sublime.

It's not your typical story about ancient curses and grave robbers, what I honestly expected, but a melancholic and atmospheric story about transformation and trancendence of the soul.

Isley is being taken by grandious past of Egypt. This is not your classical scary and creepy horror story, it's more about building an atmosphere that is so unsetteling.

Feeling that it evokes is what stayed with me even after finishing the story. The writting is so beautiful, poetic, you can emerse yourself in it. The only problem I had with this story is that it's a little bit repetative.

I can understand, with that repetativness and somewhat lack of plot, why some people could find it maybe boring. But if you like slow burning, melancholic and atmosphere building horror stories, give A Decent into Egypt a chance.

I think it's not included in Blackwood story collections, but you can find it online in pdf format it's public domain.

A bit of a slow starter compared to the previous book in the series, but the pace picks up dramatically in the second half. Anyone who's ever had to face a houseful of contentious relatives at Thanksgiving will sympathize with Meren whose dear, meddling sister has ignored his request for immediate family only and invited the extended family, each one with a bone to pick.

Looking forward to reading more in the series. Mar 03, Darth rated it liked it. I had trouble getting into this one - it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great.

My opinion may be colored by the lesser in my opinion descriptive talents of Robinson when compared to Doherty. Still not terrible, but not my favorite either.

Nov 20, Holly Lindquist rated it liked it Shelves: In this installment, Lord Meren is involved in a top secret mission on behalf of Pharaoh Tutankhamen, but his plans are hampered by family drama of the worst kind.

Blackwood was born in Shooter's Hill today part of south-east London, but then part of northwest Kent and educated at Wellington College. His father was a Post Office administrator who, according to Peter Penzoldt, "though not devoid of genuine good-heartedness, had appallingly narrow religious ideas.

In his late thirties, he moved back to England and started to write stories of the supernatural. He was very successful, writing at least ten original collections of short stories and eventually appearing on both radio and television to tell them.

A bickering family, motive that comes from a long-held secret, a small circle of suspects And as much as I like the courtly parts of this series, I find more "ordinary" crimes much more interesting The twist doubles as a very, very intriguing cliffhanger and I'm oh so eager to learn more!

As usual I really, really liked all Undoubtedly this has been my favourite book. As usual I really, really liked all the characters and it was a very enjoyable story.

After a slightly disappointing second outing that was fouled by an over-complicated plot, this third book in the Lord Meren series was much more in the realm of Agatha Christie - a murder in a family compound in ancient Egypt, with a limited set of suspects.

Generally, it was pretty good; of course the final denouement had to point to a gigantic conspiracy though! Still, I'm pretty sure I'm going to plough through the rest of this series; I'm finding it a nice escape for a couple of hours.

Oct 16, Skjam! Lord Meren wanted two things from his trip home to his estate at Baht. First, to enjoy some rest and relaxation with his children, far from the politics and dangers of the court.

And also to complete a secret task for his friend and master, Pharaoh Tutankhamun. One of these is Anhai, the beautiful but poison- Lord Meren wanted two things from his trip home to his estate at Baht.

Her marriage with the notorious womanizer is on the rocks, and several other people have good reasons to hate her. Lord Meren may be the Eyes of Pharaoh, and authorized to take steps to investigate, but his extended family has little respect for him, and his mission may be imperiled.

This is the third Lord Meren historical mystery set during the reign of King Tut, and I do not believe I have read the earlier ones. The characters are distinctive, and mostly unlikable, from drunkard little brother Ra, to the self-righteous Uncle Hepu.

At least one of the mysteries involved can be solved early by the reader who pays attention—others require more clues. This is a perfectly decent murder mystery, and I recommend it to those with an interest in Ancient Egypt.
